Kim is a senior partner, focusing his practice in the area of workers compensation defense. He also has extensive experience counseling employers regarding overlaping disability discrimination matters, including risk avoidance. Kim's clients include:

He provides counsel and representation in workers compensation risk reduction, alternative dispute resolution and litigation matters at all levels including administrative, trial and appellate levels. He has been providing high quality legal representation as a workers compensation defense lawyer for nearly thirty years. Kim has built a  national reputation for his defense of employers in workers compensation matters in Kansas.  He has developed a defense practice system with unique tools that support each individual client’s business interests, characteristics and concerns. 

Kim takes the time to communicate effectively and efficiently with his clients so they are kept up-to-date on the process of the Kansas workers compensation system, as well as the progress of their legal matters.  His goal is to provide creative, cost-effective solutions to complex workers compensation disputes, while successfully maximizing his clients’ objectives. Kim applies creative solutions to minimize prolonged litigation, thereby ultimately reducing the cost of claims for clients.  

He is a frequent lecturer on workers compensation topics nationally.  Kim is a member of the Wichita, Kansas and American Bar associations and has acted as National co-chair of the ABA Workers Compensation Committee.  He is on the executive board of the National Workers Compensation Defense Network (NWCDN) and was the first Kansas Fellow inducted into The College of Workers Compensation Lawyers.  Kim is also a member of the Kansas Association  of Defense Counsel (KADC), the Kansas Self-Insurers Association (KSIA), and the Defense Research Institute (DRI).

Kim received his B.A., cum laude, in Political Science from Wichita State University and his J.D. from the University of Kansas.  He joined the firm in 1983 and has served as the firm’s Attorney Recruiting Coordinator, Associate Training Coordinator and Supervising Partner for associate attorneys. Active in his community, Kim previously served for six years as Chairman of the Architectural Control Committee of the Huckleberry Estates Homeowners Association.

Representative Experience

  • Linda Thompson v. Law Offices of Alan Joseph, 256 Kan. 36, 883 P.2d 768 (1994)  acted as lead trial and appellate counsel for the employer/carrier in a precedent establishing Kansas Supreme Court workers compensation case involving the premises exception to the going and coming rule.
  • George Stout v. Stixon Petroleum, 17 Kan. App. 2d 195, 836 P.2d 1185 (1992)  acted as lead trial and appellate counsel for the employer/carrier involving an issue of first impression before the Kansas Court of Appeals, resulting in the outlawing of pyramiding of penalties against employers and carriers in Kansas workers compensation cases.
  • Karen Roles v. The Boeing Company, 43 Kan. App. 2d 619, 230 P.3d 771 (2010)  acted as lead trial and appellate counsel for employer/carrier procuring a significant total reversal of all awarded medical benefits ($132,000+) which applied, and favorably clarified, Kansas workers compensation legal principles relating to a claimant’s burden of proof at trial, post award medical proceedings and utilization review procedures.  The Director of Workers Compensation certified for reimbursement to employer/carrier all medical paid ($132,000+), from the Kansas Workers Compensation Fund.
